St. Thomas’ Cathedral celebrated Maundy Thursday on 13th April 2017.
The day commemorated the institution of the Blessed Sacrament of the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ at the Last Supper. One of the names for the Mass is “The Lord’s Supper”. This name is particularly appropriate for the celebration of the Mass which we have in the evening of this day. It depicts Jesus and his apostles gathered together in the Upper Room for His last meal before his death. The Gospel passage appointed for reading at the Mass is St. John ch.13:1-15.
About six hundred parishioners attended the Mass Service which started at 7.30pm. The celebrant at the Service was the Dean, the Very Rev’d Michael Buma Galami and the preacher was the Rev’d. Leslie Keyu
Immediately after the celebration of the Holy Communion, the stripping of the Altar took place. The stripping is a symbolic act signifying the way in which Jesus was stripped off his garments (Matthew ch. 27: 28 and 35). This was followed by the Watch of the Passion in the Lady Chapel which lasted until midnight.
