The Boys’ Brigade (BB) was founded on 4th October 1883 by Sir William Alexander Smith when he formed a company of 35 boys at Free Church Mission Hall, North Woodside Road, Glasgow.
William Smith, a Sunday School teacher and an officer of 1st Lanark Rifle Volunteers devised a unique system of giving Boys an organization as part of the church based on religion and discipline.
The Boys’ Brigade was the first uniformed youth organization in the world. From one small company it has grown into a worldwide organization with companies in over 60 countries.
In 1958, Mr Charles Henry Ingka, aged 25 returned home from Singapore after having there since 1947. In 1948, while studying in St Andrew’s School, he had joined the 7th Singapore Company. Mr Ingka saw the need for proper training among Kuching Boys and he knew that BB was the answer. He came back to Kuching, full of faith, inspiration and dedication for BB and on 19th January 1961, he wrote a letter to the Bishop of Borneo with the intention to start a BB company in East Malaysia. That letter marked the beginning of a new era of the Boys’ Brigade here on the island of Borneo. Mr Charles Henry Ingka, together with five officers and 20 boys pioneered the first company, which signaled the start of BB movement in Sarawak.
